The Unani system of medicine is among the most widely spread and accepted form of medication and physician remedy across the globe. Unan means Greek (in Arbic). The origin is traced back to the Greek literature, which has been a source of quite a lot of scientific contributions. Hippocrates, who lived around BC 400, and is normally attributed as the father of modern medicine, had laid the foundation stone for this efficient system.
Onwards, famous medical personalities like Zakariya Rasi, Ibn Seena, Jalinoos, etc, tried to contemplate this system of medicine in its entirety. The Unani medicine is based around the concepts of the four humours: Phlegm (Balgham), Blood (Dam), Yellow bile (Ṣafrā') and Black bile (Saudā'). The Four elements Theory and Four Humour Theory is the main ideological platform where Unani System of medicine is based upon. 'Al Qanoon Fi-Tib' (The Canon of Medicine) by Ibnuseena was once considered the most authentic and reliable manuscript and source of therapeutic comprehension. Most of Unani treatments are reliant upon this book. The Mughal Dynasty gave ample promotion of this system which in turn had reached India through Arabian diplomatic and trade relations with the country. Hakim Ajmal Kahan (Delhi), who was a freedom fighter and a Doctor, redeemed the System which the British invasion of the country had blown and smacked.
Unani Medicines are obtained naturally from herbal, mineral or animal sources. The treatments in Unani system of medicine is by the medication of these natural drugs in compound forms like tablests, pills, Majun, Sharbath ...etc. The treatment may be completed by applying regimental therapies like cupping, leeching, veinisection ...etc when required.
This is one of the WHO (World Health organization) accepted system of medicine. Eradicating the patient's physical, mental and social turmoil is among the principal concern of Unani. Apart from the disease, the physical soundness of the patient is more importantly, our chief concern.
